Kagura of Gion Shrine (Ta-uta no Kagura)

祇園社の神楽(田歌の神楽)
The annual festival of Yasaka Shrine takes place on July 14th. A unique Kagura performance, said to have been passed down by villagers praying for a bountiful harvest, is showcased. Villagers dressed as Tengu, Oni, Hyottoko, Otafuku, old man, and other characters dedicate three songs—“Kagura,” “Sangiri,” and “Nigi-makura”—to the shrine. The parade starts at noon, but preparations such as makeup and dressing up begin around 10 a.m. If you wish to witness these scenes, it is recommended to visit in the morning.
