Kagura of Gion Shrine (Tauta no Kagura)

祇園社の神楽(田歌の神楽)
The annual Yasaka Shrine Festival, held on July 14th each year. It is said to be a unique Kagura passed down by villagers wishing for a bountiful harvest. Villagers wear costumes of Tengu, demons, Hyottoko, Otafuku, and old men, and offer three songs 'Kagura', 'Sangiri', and 'Nigi Makura' to the shrine. The procession starts at noon, but makeup and dressing begin around 10 AM. Visitors interested in seeing these scenes are recommended to visit from the morning.
