Torishima Hari Boat Race Festival

鳥島ハーリー
The event, known as 'ハーリー', held on the old calendar's May 4th, celebrates the sea deity, with rowing competitions using sabani boats to pray for a good catch. Regarded as Okinawa's most vibrant early-summer event, it was originally a festival for fishermen to pray for a bountiful catch and safe voyages. In recent years, it has become popularized, allowing women, children, and tourists to participate. Across various fishing ports in the prefecture, traditional races using sabani boats unfold, and Kume Island hosts grand competitions at Gima, Torishima, and Madomari ports. Cost: Free ※There is a custom of giving a gratuity to the organizing groups, typically 1,000 to 2,000 yen per household.
