Tokugawa Art Museum Special Exhibition: "The Splendid Life of Chiyo-hime"

徳川美術館 企画展「千代姫の華麗なる生涯」

During the Edo period, the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan, was an indispensable presence in Japanese history and culture and is known as the "Three Houses". Among them, the Owari Tokugawa family, which has inherited numerous treasures, stores and displays them in the "Tokugawa Art Museum". The museum is holding a special exhibition reviewing the life of Shogun Princess "Chiyo-hime", the first child of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.

Chiyo-hime (1637-98) was born in Edo Castle as the first child of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and she was a shogun princess by birth. To ensure a successor for Iemitsu, who initially lacked male heirs, she married Mitsutomo, the second head of the Owari Tokugawa family, at the tender age of 2 years and 6 months. Her subsequent brothers, Ietsuna and Tsunayoshi, became shoguns, and as their sister, Chiyo-hime's life was nothing short of magnificent.
As a bridge to the shogun family, Chiyo-hime laid the foundations for the prosperity of the Owari Tokugawa family. We look back on her life and achievements.
