Insect Sending

虫送り
A traditional event that has been held for about 300 years to ward off insects from rice plants and pray for a good harvest. A fire, sparked from the sun, is transferred to a torch called "hote," and participants proceed along the rice field paths while holding it aloft. The sight of the blazing torch reflected on the surface of the rice seedlings' water has become an early summer tradition.
