Nankan Summer Festival Gion Festival
なんかん夏まつり ぎおんさん
Gion Festival is the summer festival of Yatsurugi Shrine, which enshrines the spirit of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Originating more than 380 years ago in the 17th year of Kan'ei (1640), it is said that from that time people have been praying for prosperity in business, bountiful harvests, and good health. The main attraction of the festival is the 3-meter-tall imposing serpent floats. During the day, children pull the floats, and at night, the floats that scatter sparks from the serpent's mouth are pulled by young people, parading through the shopping streets of Sekimachi. Let's set out to experience the festival atmosphere woven with tradition and power.
