Shimodate Gion Festival
下館祇園まつり
The "Meiji Mikoshi," which weighs about one ton and has a history dating back to Meiji 28 (1895), the "Women's Mikoshi" dedicated to the enshrined deity Tamayorihime of Haguro Shrine, and the "Heisei Mikoshi," which is the heaviest mikoshi carried out every year in Japan—all three paraded together, along with a spectacular procession of over 30 children's mikoshi from all over the old Shimodate area, make for an awe-inspiring sight. On the third day, the "Wasshoi Carnival," where mikoshi and festival floats from both inside and outside the city gather in one place, brings excitement to its peak. In the early morning of the final day, the "River Procession," in which the Meiji Mikoshi is carried into the river, takes place to conclude this quintessential summer event.
