Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival
弘前城雪燈籠まつり
The Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival is a unique winter celebration adorned with snow and light, distinct from the castle’s famed cherry blossom viewing season. Handmade snow lanterns crafted by local residents bring warmth and a magical atmosphere to the long winter nights. The illuminated castle keep and pine trees evoke a special tranquility and nostalgia only found in the cold season. Around the lotus pond at the venue, rows of mini kamakuras (snow huts) with candles inside create an enchanting scene. In the main Shinomaru venue, you will find giant snow sculptures reminiscent of history and large snow slides that everyone from children to adults can enjoy. The opportunity to participate in various snow play activities and events adds to the festival’s appeal. What makes this festival special are the handmade snow lanterns and mini kamakuras, which create a unique landscape that can only be seen here. The fantasy woven by snow and light cannot be experienced elsewhere. If you visit, it is recommended to take a slow stroll from the Honmaru (main enclosure) to the lotus pond at dusk, enjoying the mystical contrast of the soft candlelight and the snowy scenery.
