The Hirosaki Castle Chrysanthemum and Autumn Foliage Festival is a traditional autumn event held at Hirosaki Park in the Tsugaru region, where visitors can enjoy the autumn leaves and chrysanthemums together. The maples and cherries that surround the park are beautifully colored, and locally cultivated chrysanthemums are displayed against the backdrop of the historic Hirosaki Castle. Continuing the tradition that began in the 1950s, the festival is still participated in by many people today. At the main venue, the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden, intricate flower art is exhibited and the Citizens’ Chrysanthemum Exhibition is also held. In addition to the mountain gate and five-story pagoda of Seiganji Temple being decorated with chrysanthemums, children can enjoy riding the mini bullet train, making it a delightful time for families and friends alike. During the event, a special nighttime illumination of the autumn leaves and the castle is held. The contrast between the blazing autumn leaves and chrysanthemums floating in the darkness is a unique scene available only at this time of year. Be sure to enjoy the view of Mt. Iwaki from the castle’s honmaru or northern enclosure while savoring the magical collaboration of illuminated autumn leaves and chrysanthemums.
