Fire Throwing Festival

火ふり祭
This is the fire festival beautifully unfolding over the nights of August 14 and 15 at Hibarino, the Otabisho (resting place) of the Hino Festival’s procession (Togyo). Villagers from Uenoda and Satoguchi, gathered at their tutelary shrine Gosha Shrine in Uenoda, light approximately 3-meter-long torches around the three chigo (children) of that year’s Hino Festival, form a procession, and head to Hibarino. Hibarino is dotted with several old pine trees; the villagers encircle these pines and, at the signal of the drums, simultaneously hurl their torches toward the branches. The sight of over a hundred torches tracing arcs in the sky all at once is truly spectacular.
