Kasuga Shrine Summer Festival

春日神社夏祭
"The Kasuga Shrine Summer Festival" is the largest festival of Kasuga Shrine, held over two days every year: the eve festival on July 18th and the Natsugoshi Grand Festival on the 19th. On the 18th, there is a parade of children's portable shrines, bringing lively crowds until late at night. On the 19th, the main event, the portable shrine procession, takes place. Under the direction of officers led by the grand leader chosen from among the local parish youths, a large group of shrine bearers and tall lantern bearers participate in the procession. Amidst the resounding beats of the Chikirin drums, the entry of the golden-shining mikoshi (portable shrine) into the shrine is a magnificent sight. Both days, sacred kagura performances are dedicated in the shrine grounds, lined with food stalls, creating a bustling atmosphere. Additionally, in the shrine grounds and along the approach, 100 "standing lanterns" are set up, and at night, the lantern bags are lit, inviting visitors into a fantastical world.
