The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake 30th Anniversary: The Grand Van Gogh Exhibition - Café Terrace at Night

阪神・淡路大震災30年 大ゴッホ展 夜のカフェテラス

At the Kobe City Museum in Hyogo, the "30th Anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake: Major Van Gogh Exhibition - Café Terrace at Night" will be held as part of the 30th anniversary activities of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) is one of the most representative painters of the Netherlands. Although he has become hugely popular worldwide today and is celebrated for his unique presence, his life was filled with hardships. However, he continued to face adversity with unyielding strength, and found peace and healing in art.

This exhibition will showcase masterpieces, including "Café Terrace at Night," from the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum. The first phase, to be held in 2025 on the 30th anniversary of the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, will introduce the early years of Van Gogh’s artistic career from his time in the Netherlands up to Arles, tracing his journey to becoming the widely known Van Gogh.

The second phase, scheduled for 2027, will feature works such as "The Langlois Bridge at Arles" and "Country Road in Provence by Night" arriving in Japan, focusing on Van Gogh’s later works from Arles to the end of his life. Across both phases, the exhibition will display about 100 works in total. Additionally, oil paintings by Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir from the Kröller-Müller Museum’s collection will also be on display.
