Grand Nenjō Pulling
大捻縄引き
The Grand Nenjō Pulling is a daring traditional rope-pulling event with a long history, selected as a "Nationally Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Asset." Unlike typical tug-of-war, in this event, people pull a massive 50-meter-long and 50-centimeter-wide straw rope. It is held in Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture, easily accessible from Tokyo. The event venue is filled with the spectacle of participants pulling the gigantic rope and stalls offering local specialties. Additionally, workshops and exhibitions allow visitors to engage with traditional culture, giving them a chance to experience Japanese folk culture. This Grand Nenjō Pulling features various limited and unique exhibitions and events, providing participants with a special experience. It is a perfect opportunity to experience the courageous bon-rope pulling and feel Japanese culture firsthand. Do come and enjoy an exceptional day!
