Echigo Yamakoshi "Ushi no Tsunotsuki" Tournament

越後山古志「牛の角突き」大会

The "Ushi no Tsunotsuki" (Bull-Bumping) tournament held in Echigo Yamakoshi is a traditional event with a thousand-year history. Here, robust bulls build deep relationships with their owners and fight with a view to a draw. What is particularly impressive about this tournament is the skillful way of subduing the bulls to prevent injuries. Additionally, inside the Yamakoshi Bullfighting Arena, there is a Memorial Gallery where one can explore the history, and group visits are welcome. Traveling by car is the most convenient, with shuttle buses also available from Nagaoka Station. However, please note that shuttle buses do not operate during pre-events or on specific event days. This event is overflowing with visual and historical charm, and you should definitely participate to experience its intensity.
