Ojiya Bullhead Fight

おぢや牛の角突き
The shout "Yoshitaa" echoes everywhere as the bulls clash. The thrilling bullhead fighting is described in the late Edo period's "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden" written by Takizawa Bakin. It has been preserved and passed down as a regional traditional event for many years. Unlike bullfighting across the country, Echigo's bullhead fights generally end in a draw. The reason is said to be because it is a religious ritual or to preserve the fighting spirit of the bulls. *Please prepare your own mat.
