Yawata Taiko Festival
やわた太鼓まつり
"The Taiko Festival" is a magnificent festival in which large "Yakata Daiko" drums, built for each neighborhood, are mounted on floats. Accompanied by vigorous shouts of "Yossā, Yossā," participants parade energetically through the city, beating the drums fixed onto the portable shrines powerfully from all directions.
"The Taiko Festival" is also unusual nationwide for featuring a portable shrine with both people and drums riding atop it. The climactic "Miyairi," in which the portable shrine with people on it is swung violently up, down, left, and right along the worship approach amid chants, is particularly thrilling.
The history of this festival is old, continuing since the late Edo period. Although it briefly ceased after the war, it was revived and is now a hallmark of early summer in Yahata, passed down to the present day.
The Miyairi takes place at dusk on the day before Marine Day, at the approach in front of the famous Korasan Shrine, known from "Tsurezuregusa," marking the climax of the festival. Four neighborhood drums and a children's drum gather, and about 100 townsfolk from each neighborhood take turns carrying the roughly two-ton Yakata Daiko along the approach, showcasing the Miyairi. The synchronized passion of the carriers and the fanners excites onlookers.
Around the Korasan Shrine, food stalls open up, enriching the atmosphere of a summer festival. Please do come and join with your family!
