The Otanjinsai is a festival celebrating the birthday of the enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane. Every year, from August 3rd to 5th, various celebratory and dedicatory events are held, including a fireworks display and Mantou evening, to celebrate Michizane’s birthday. During the Mantou evening, about 2,000 lanterns are lit on the Omotesando of Hofu Tenmangu, and on August 5th, Michizane’s birthday, a grand fireworks display is conducted.
