Hofu Tenmangu Rice Planting Festival, Nagoshi Ritual, and Great Purification Ceremony
防府天満宮御田植祭・夏越神事・大祓式
Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, located in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is considered to be the first Tenjin shrine established in Japan. Every year on June 30th, the "Hofu Tenmangu Rice Planting Festival, Nagoshi Ritual, and Great Purification Ceremony" is held. This is a ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest and ward off epidemics. During the "Rice Planting Festival," shrine maidens plant rice seedlings in a temporary paddy within the shrine grounds to pray for a good harvest. In the "Nagoshi Ritual," participants pass through a wisteria ring to pray for protection and prosperity. We invite you to visit and pray for protection and prosperity as well.
