The Tonsha Ceremony of Honmyoji Temple
本妙寺の頓写会
Honmyoji Temple is the mausoleum of Kato Kiyomasa and is a major Nichiren sect temple in Kyushu. The Tonsha-e ceremony began when the third head priest of Honmyoji, Korean Nichiyo Shonin, transcribed the Lotus Sutra during the first anniversary memorial service for Kiyomasa. By the third anniversary, all the priests of Honmyoji joined Nichiyo Shonin in transcribing the Lotus Sutra together, and within a single night, they managed to copy all eight volumes and twenty-eight chapters (69,384 characters) of the Lotus Sutra. Because the sutras were transcribed (ton, "quickly") in a single night, the ceremony came to be called "Tonsha-e."
