One Hundred Scenes of Animals: From the Collection of the Edo Tokyo Museum

どうぶつ百景―江戸東京博物館コレクションより

During the long period of peace in the Edo era, Japan's cityscapes—especially around castle towns—were well developed. But how did people interact with animals in their daily lives? Edward S. Morse, an American zoologist who visited Japan in the early Meiji period, was surprised by how kindly the Japanese treated animals. He noted that people in towns would avoid disturbing dogs and cats resting in the streets, and would affectionately address animals with the honorific “-san.” Animals were treated lovingly as members of the community, coexisting harmoniously with people.

This exhibition is an expanded homecoming version of the “Living Things: Life with Animals in Edo-Tokyo” show, which enjoyed great success in Paris in 2022. It introduces the lives and history of humans and animals using items from the collection of the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Around 230 carefully selected pieces—depicting people enjoying life with animals, as well as representations of animals incorporated into art, crafts, and toys—will gather from a massive collection of over 600,000 items!
