The Rhinoceros Beetle House is located at “Yumemi-ga-Oka” on the mid-slope of the Hieizan Driveway. Rhinoceros beetles are released into a 450 m² grove of mixed woods covered with netting. Some 200 to 300 beetles are kept loose on the grounds at all times. Visitors can freely observe their ecology up close—touch them by hand, watch them in flight, or see males fighting each other. In the adjacent exhibition hall “Forest Friends Pavilion,” there are panel displays covering the life cycle of rhinoceros beetles, as well as live specimens and collections of rare foreign rhinoceros and stag beetles. Rhinoceros beetles bred in Japan are also available for purchase upon request.
