Hieizan Enryakuji Temple "Demon-Chasing Ceremony"

比叡山延暦寺「鬼追い式」
Hieizan Enryakuji Temple's "Oni Oi-shiki" is a special ceremony held on New Year's Eve night at the Konpon Chudo of Hieizan Enryakuji. In the silence of the night, flames burn brightly, and a powerful oni-chasing performance unfolds to ward off evil. Participants can experience the exchanges between the demon role and the ascetic monks up close, savoring the unique tension and solemn atmosphere that only comes at the end of the year. At the venue, Konpon Chudo, monks and demons dressed in traditional costumes appear in the solemn main hall, and the oni-chasing is performed to the sound of drums and conch shells. Spectators can also purify their hearts as part of the ceremony, and the sense of unity is one of its attractions. This event is limited to just once a year on New Year's Eve, offering a precious experience where the solemn air of the temple and traditional ritual are fused. The most recommended way to enjoy it is to visit the temple from dusk and spend a special moment watching the oni-chasing ceremony up close amid the magical flames, while making wishes in your heart for the coming year.
