Joya no Kane (Mount Hiei Enryaku-ji)

除夜の鐘(比叡山延暦寺) 
A major year-end and New Year’s event. Following the special Dharma talk at the Konpon Chudo, the oni-chasing ritual draws long queues every year. Although the Joya no Kane bell-ringing is broadcast on TV programs, visitors purchase a lucky arrow and obtain a numbered ticket, then wait their turn. Free refreshments include sweet sake and simmered daikon, there is also New Year’s soba, and for overnight stays you can use the Enryaku-ji Kaikan.

Transportation:Public Transportation Keihan Electric Railway/Keishin Line: Get off at "Sakamoto-Hieizanguchi" Station, 10-minute walk. Transfer to the Sakamoto Cable Car and get off at the final station. JR Kosei Line: Get off at "Hieizan-Sakamoto" Station, 20-minute walk. Transfer to the Sakamoto Cable Car and get off at the final station. By Car ■ From Meishin Expressway Kyoto-Higashi IC, take the Nishi-Otsu Bypass, then exit at the Omi-Jingu Interchange. Follow the Shimogamo-Otsu Line (via Yamanaka Hill) to the Tanotani Pass Gate. ■ From central Kyoto, take the Shimogamo-Otsu Line (via Yamanaka Hill) from Kitashirakawa-Bettocho to the Tanotani Pass Gate. ■ From the Lake Biwa Bridge direction, take National Route 161 and Prefectural Route 558, then from Ogoto enter the Oku-Hiei Driveway to the Ogi Gate. Parking Regular cars: 425 spaces Large vehicles: 100 spaces Others Sakamoto Cable Car: 10-minute walk from Cable Enryaku-ji Station
