Ohara Gion Festival
大原祇園祭
On July 23 from 9:00 PM
As the 'Evening Festival' (Yoimiya-matsuri), participants place lanterns on their heads and enter the shrine, singing 'In-yo-i-so-ra' and clashing lanterns together.
The climax takes place in the spacious courtyard in front of the worship hall, where ten dancers from Ohara Junior High (five on each side) line up and perform the lion dance fire-taking ceremony.
On July 24 from 3:00 PM
In the 'Main Festival', also called the 'Fighting Festival', the 'Flower Stealing' event is held.
In the 'Flower Stealing' of the main festival, a fierce scene unfolds between those who try to snatch decorated flowers and those who use green bamboo poles to prevent them.
This ritual is held to dispel all calamities and disease demons, and is known for its splendor and roughness.
