Great Goma Fire Ritual
大護摩供
At Naemura Shrine, which houses a National Treasure shrine building, a grand Goma fire ritual (Daigoma-kuyō) is held to pray for health and household safety. This ritual practice dates back to the Kamakura period and has a history of about 800 years.
Along with the shrine ceremony at the main hall, the Goma ritual begins at the Fudō Myōō Hall upon the signal of a conch shell. Approximately 1,000 wooden sticks (Gomagi), each carrying individual wishes, are gathered and ignited (Gomagi are accepted until the day before). As bright red flames soar and thick smoke billows, around ten yamabushi practitioners dressed in ascetic robes perform the prayers.
On the day, there is also a special opening of the Important Cultural Property "Statue of Fudō Myōō." This statue is the honji-butsu (original Buddha) and is a precious cultural asset that conveys the tradition of Shinbutsu-shūgō (syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism) from the early Kamakura period. Also, at the same time as the Daigoma ritual starts, a "Children's Sumo" performed by elementary school boys from the shrine parishioner villages is dedicated in the precincts.
