Ten Thousand Lantern Memorial Service at Injo-ji Temple
引接寺 万燈供養
The Mantō Kuyō at Injo-ji is a ceremony in which believers personally offer memorial lights to approximately 5,000 stone Buddhas gathered in the Raigō Pure Land (raigō jōdo), held annually on August 22. The stone Buddhas in the Pure Land were once lovingly cared for and worshipped, but were burned and abandoned in the mountains by Oda Nobunaga. To this day, these stone Buddhas remain scattered across the surrounding hills, with their numbers said to range from several thousand to tens of thousands.
During the Mantō Kuyō, children and devotees wearing large earthen bells around their waists go around lighting lamps for each stone Buddha. The sight of all the stone Buddhas illuminated creates a profoundly mystical atmosphere, making it a famous summer sight. On the day of the event, a mantō festival, ceremony, bazaar, and various attractions are held.
